Davis Island   --  At the Pink Flamingo, everything is new except the concept and the cooking.

It's a new building and a new location in the islands' business district, says owner Sal Diblasi, with a generous amount of pride.  But the menu has not changed.

"My intention wasn't to expand and make this really big," Diblasi said.  "I want to keep the same warm, family feel.

"I plan on doing this until I retire," he said.  "I wanted to establish a long-term relationship in a new environment."

After nesting for six years at 210 E. Davis Blvd., the Pink Flamingo flew the coop about September 2004 for its new location in the remodeled Davis Island Super Market building, just down the block.

The old grocery store, also known for decades as Pete's Market, is now the Davis Island Plaza and offers retail space for five businesses.  Next to it is the old market's parking lot, offering a Davis Islands rarity -- spaces for customers to use.

That was one of the factors prompting the move, DiBlasi said.  The restaurant is at the south end of the building, closest to the parking lot.

" A lot of handicapped people wanted to come to the old restaurant but there was no place close by for them to park," he said.  "here, they can park right beside us."

The Flamingo has kept its seaside theme, with stuffed fish and other knickknacks hanging from the ceiling and an aquarium near the front door.

Instead of maintaining the 62-set capacity he had at the old location, DiBlasi ended up with four seats fewer because he insisted on building a children's play area in one corner.

Additionally, he put three tables outside between the restaurant front and Davis Boulevard.  It has become particularly popular with customers who like to dine with their pets along, DiBlasi said.

As in the past, grouper sandwiches, fruit plates, and crab cake Benedict from the breakfast menu, remain among the most ordered.

Breakfast dishes range from a one egg-potatoes-toast plate at $2.85 to the crab cake Benedict at $6.95

Most of the hot and cold lunch plates, including soup and salad combinations, range between $5 and $7.
